Dear Pawan Kalyan,

Dear Pawan Kalyan,

Firstly, let me tell you that I write this letter as someone who likes and admires you but is not a die-hard “I want your movie to be hit and break all records” fan.

I watched Sardaar Gabbar Singh on the first day and was very disappointed with it. There are multiple things I had problems with and since none of the people interviewing you seem to ask or tell you about it, I’ve decided to ask you myself. Also, I enjoyed the 4 interviews you gave to Telugu news channels more than the movie itself. Here are some questions I have and my problems with the movie

  1. In interviews you explained the risk you took in entering Hindi market and how while you may fail, the seed sowed would benefit others and that someone had to take the step.I then ask you, why is it that you are not being bold enough to change the formula oriented mass commercial entertainers in Telugu. In more than one interview you explained how your hands are tied due to the fixed parameters that telugu movies follow. I would have hoped you to break it instead of following it.
  2. A lot of people are speculating that you ghost directed the movie. I don’t believe that. I believe you when you say that Bobby directed it. But, given your stardom and the fact that it was your story and screenplay, do you think a 2nd film director like bobby would have been bold enough to tell you that your screenplay was bad and change it? Why the reluctance to work with big directors?
  3. You said in interviews that you hardly watch any Telugu movies(including yours), while I think this is OK for an actor, do you think this is right for someone writing the story and screenplay? How will he know that in the 2.5 years it took him to write this outdated story and screenplay, there has been a gradual change in how telugu films are being made and watched. Kshanam, Nannaku Prematho, Oopiri and Kanche are redefining telugu movies and even entertainers such as Nenu Shailaja and Krishna Gadi veera prema gadha are making sure the story and screenplay are good and not relying just on an abundance of comedians.
  4. You spoke of how there is no inner circle and outer circle as claimed by RGV but I wonder whether you truly know the criticism your films receive and not just the final “hit” result since you do not watch them yourself. When 4 different channel interviewees did not dare to ask you about the bad screenplay of SGS, how do you think a person like me would be confident that you are getting the correct feedback of your movies from your friends and family?
  5. Even amidst a string a flop movies, you had dared to do a movie like Bangaram which did not have a heroine. You dared to direct Johnny at the peak of your career and tried to break quite a few stereotypes. Where has that person disappeared? Who is this new person who is making safe movies with elements pleasing his fans.
  6. I also wonder if there is miscommunication somewhere between your fans and you. General audience became your fans on the back of story and content based movies like Tholiprema, Thammudu, Kushi and Badri and we see in the last 3-4 movies, how “commercial” “formula” elements  have been included for the sake of the same fans. Are these the same fans? It feels like once they became fans, they started to expect very different stuff from you and everyone is catering to them. It feels ironic when a director says he is including them for fans and those fans were born out of Tholiprema and Thammudu.
  7. Lastly, a political question. Your graph in movies has been interesting. You started off bravely, made a lot of good movies, dared to do direction, rose from the failure to continue fighting but lately have started catering to your fans rather than continue on your own unique graph. I fear that your graph in politics may be similar. Start daringly, fight well but eventually start catering to what the people want. People are not always right and by giving everything people want, sometimes it does more damage to the larger good. Hopefully you remain true to yourself in politics.

I want to conclude by saying that I respect your opinion to quit acting and I will stand by you whether you quit today or tomorrow or in 3 years time and I wish all fans do the same if they truly love you.

  5. He also told that this movie came out of necessity. He needed money to maintain his expenses. So obviously he cannot risk anything and went on making a commercial film with entertaining elements but it didn’t workout in the way he thought. Except the point of writing story and screenplay without watching the movies all the other points are bullshit. He is not interested in acting. As of now he is acting only for 2 reasons one is for his survival and other is for his fans. He cannot risk it by making films like kshanam. He worked really hard for this movie. Instead of noticing that stop showing of your brilliance by asking such questions. And the last question was so silly. So stop judging things without knowing or understanding the other person’s situation. And yes writing without watching movies will not workout I accept that. No offense.

  6. Ramakanth,
I really agree with your point#3.But I feel on any case there would be any actor or any journalist would come to an agreement(or even discuss) that the movie is flop within a few days of its release. It is not the matter of dare or any guts,(as you call ), for any journalist or Pawan to question or reveal of the negative aspects of the movie, during the interview, it is all about the consequences that would arise if any would agrees to do.Unlike others, he came out and gave his part in promotions despite himself of being aware of the movie’s result, which should be appreciated, rather than this.

  9. good comments above.#respects to Ravi kanth.starting…..every movie can’t be a hit.and every hit movie can’t be good.the previous movies of PK were marvellous and no one dares to name them…having a career at peaks no human thinks that a movie could get flop.it happens….we cant judge people .for eg:people like comedy movies but why dont they watch movies of allari naresh in theatres ,they want only big heroes comedy movies.every director, actor wants a hit ,but some movies fails at box office.i agree what ravikanth said about screenplay and daring of pk.but he should also satisfy all his fans.in this process he may also get wrong by deciding the story which he had written would be a hit.but coming to the screen everything cant be presented and there will lags and thats what happened in the case of SGS.there is no hero like pk who dared his life by letting cars on his hands.we can watch it in thammudu…..all the movies he acted upto khushi were blockbusters….and jalsa to AD were also good hits.but flops occur to him also.he is not a god to think what will happen in future.he needs the support of fans at every moment…the expectation should get lessened…every big should start working with new directors encourage new talent .

I didnt get what joga said…but joga he may have only 10 hits but just watch those movies again ….those were unique above all heroes….thats why he has a huge following..

  13. You have some interesting questions that make sense.
If pawan kalyan thinks that Telugu movies are stereo type, he should do something to break out of it.
We will see his movies irrespective of whether they have commercials elements are not.
He is not paying any attention towards grooming and physique. I really doubt his comment saying big directors are not interested in working with him.
Hope he gets your comments somehow and rethinks his approach towards movies.
